  • THE WOODBURNER'S COMPANION
THE WOODBURNER'S COMPANION - Practical Ways of Heating with Wood, by Dirk Thomas If you have a woodburing stove this is a book you should have and read. I have 25 years experience of heating with wood and I still found helpful tips to improve my fire building and starting and how to maintain a cleaner burn. If you like to have a fire in your fireplace or are thinking about purchasing a wood stove or fireplace insert this is the book for you. You can order on line or call 717-267-0867 to order a copy that will cost only $20 including shipping. Ask at your local bookstore to see if they carry the book. This is what the publisher has to say about this book: 'Burning wood for heat can benefit your household in many ways, especially if you live outside the city. When petroleum and natural gas prices climb, the economic benefit of woodburning is clear. Add to that independence from outside forces, and heating with wood can bring you genuine stress relief. If the electricity goes off, you stay warm. And you have that feeling of security as you look out the window at a neatly stacked pile of firewood, your "savings account," ready for a cold winter's night.'

  • The Nasty Art of Removing Popcorn Ceiling Texture
This link takes you to www.naturalhandyman.com where it says the following: This article is reproduced with permission from the Olympic Region Clean Air Agency in Lacey, WA. It has been slightly modified to be viewed by a general audience. References to local laws, rules, regulations and procedures may or may not apply to you in your area. The focus of this article is on the mechanical removal of spray textures but also on the risks and cautions involved... especially if yours contains asbestos, a known carcinogen. Many of the early spray mixes did contain significant amounts of asbestos, but there is no way to know for sure without laboratory testing.
  • What is asbestos, and why should I care?
This link takes you to more information from www.naturalhandyman.com which says "Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in many parts of the world, mined primarily in Canada, South Africa and the United States. Nearly 3/4 of the world's supply comes from Quebec, Canada. It has been used since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans and was prized for its heat resistant properties. Used to insulate the boilers of steam locomotives in the 1930's, asbestos was not in widespread use until the 1940's. After World War II, the asbestos industry in the US literally exploded. According to the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) , in that time over 100,000 schools and 700,000 public and commercial buildings used asbestos for insulation, decoration and fireproofing." • In place water pipe cleaning and sealing.
This is one company that performs this service. I have no personal experience with this company.
