Call 811 before you dig in Washington
What does Call Before You Dig Mean? It's simple: CALL - 811, the one call center serving the Puget Sound area in which you plan to excavate. BEFORE - Two business days before you dig. YOU - Homeowners, contractors, or anyone digging for any reason. DIG - Using shovels, post hole diggers, fence post drivers, or heavy equipment. If you are digging deeper than 12 inches the law requires you to call. RCW 19.122.030 says in part "Before commencing any excavation, excluding agriculture tilling less than twelve inches in depth, the excavator shall provide notice of the scheduled commencement of excavation to all owners of underground facilities through a one-number locator service." Locator service is free and that is a lot cheaper than paying for damages.
